Un grupo de investigadores de la Universidad Libre de Bruselas ha descubierto en India una nueva especie de rana, cuya peculiaridad es que en su fase adulta tan sólo llega a medir un centímetro. Esta nueva clase de rana, descubierta en los bosques tropicales del estado Kerala, al sur de la India, ha sido bautizada con el nombre de "Nyctibatrachus minimus" y a pesar de su escaso tamaño los investigadores han comprobado que su desarrollo físico es similar al de otros especies de ranas de mayor tamaño. Hasta ahora, este nuevo anfibio pasaba desapercibido al pensarse que simplemente se trataba de otra especie de rana aún en estado de crecimiento, por lo que no había sido estudiado como un tipo de espécimen en sí mismo. Gracias a este descubrimiento los investigadores de la Universidad Libre de Bruselas vaticinan que a partir de ahora se podrán registrar otros tipos de ranas de similar tamaño, que hasta ahora se pensaba que no habían llegado a su pleno desarrollo. Los investigadores ya habían descubierto varias nuevas especies de ranas en los últimos años, entre ellas variedades capaces de permanecer durante una semana bajo tierra o que viven en los árboles de bosques tropicales. El descubrimiento fue publicado también en la revista científica india "Current Science".
